The 5 Best Websites for Freelancers

2023 is shaping up to be one of the most significant years ever for freelancers — so much so that 78% of companies will hire freelancers instead of adding new employees.

So, how do you join this growing market? There are so many freelance websites; it can take time to figure out which is right for you. Make the wrong call, and you may have wasted hours of setup and outreach.

Luckily, we can help you make the right decision. Here are five of the best freelance websites based on the factors most important to you. Ready to get started? Let’s go!

Why Your Freelance Jobs Should Be on A Website

Having a website for your freelance services can offer many benefits to both you and your clients.

For starters, it allows potential clients to quickly find out more information about you and the kind of work you do. A centralized platform where prospects can discover you, peruse your portfolio, and buy your services will grease the wheels on your business funnel.

Plus, by having all your contact details in one place, clients can easily reach out, book time, and get in touch with you — and what better way to strengthen your business relationships?

Additionally, having an online presence helps boost credibility, as potential customers will be able to access testimonials from past clients, samples of your work, and other important information that could convince them to hire you

With the global freelance job sites market set to grow at a CAGR of 15.02% over the next five years, being on a freelance website is non-negotiable.

How to Select the Right Freelancing Platform for You

As a freelancer, there are some key factors to bear in mind as you select a platform to put your services on:

Fees and pricing: Does the platform take a commission on your sales? If so, how much? Are there any hidden costs, such as listing or withdrawal fees?

Payment and security: Is your payment secure? Does the platform offer an escrow system, so clients can pay you securely through the website?

Availability of buyers: How many potential buyers could be interested in your services on this platform?

Customer support: What kind of customer service does the freelance platform provide? Are they available round-the-clock, or only during limited hours?

Let’s look at freelancing platforms through these lenses to see which one is right for you!

The 5 Best Freelancing Platforms for 2023

Fiverr

Fiverr is an excellent platform for digital freelancers of all skill and experience levels.
Availability of buyers: Fiverr is popular with individual buyers and companies, giving you a wide range of potential clients.
Customer support: Fiverr has excellent customer service ratings with 24/7 availability for customers who need help

Upwork

Upwork is another global freelance website that boasts an impressive user base of professionals worldwide. From web design to copywriting, Upwork has it all — so if you offer services in multiple areas, this could be the ideal solution for you!

Fees and pricing: Upwork has a tiered fee system. They take a 20% commission on each order up to $500, 10% on anything between that and $10,000, and 5% on anything greater.

Availability of buyers: With over five million clients spending over $2.5 billion annually, Upwork is the place to be for big-ticket freelancers.

Customer support: Upwork has an extensive customer service team that is available 24/7 by phone and email

Freelancer

Freelancer.com is a remarkable platform for freelance designers, web development, design, writing, marketing, or any other service related to the digital space. It has a large user base of both companies and individuals looking for top-notch talent in their specific area.

Payment and security: Freelancer offers secure payment — in fact, they own Escrow.com — and even enforces a security period if required based on your stats.

Availability of buyers: According to Indeed, over 30 million registered users have posted 14 million+ jobs on the platform, so you won’t be short of freelance work any time soon.

Customer support: Their customer service team is available 24/7 via email or live chat.

Toptal

TopTal is one of the top freelance websites for experts in software development, finance, graphic design, and other areas. It’s popular amongst big companies looking for technical talent as their vetting process is extremely rigorous. Only about 3% of applicants make it through and are accepted into the platform, so job seekers, beware — you’ve got your work cut out for you!

Fees and pricing: TopTal charges no fees on the freelancer side — they make their money with service fees on the client’s side.

Payment and security: TopTal takes payment security seriously — they use secure protocols like TLS 1.2, end-to-end encryption, and PCI DSS Level 1 compliance to ensure that your payments are safe.

Availability of buyers: TopTal has a very select clientele, with high-profile companies like Duolingo, Zendesk, and UCSF using their services.

Customer support: TopTal boasts excellent customer service ratings and provides round-the-clock support through email or live chat.

30mins

30mins is a social platform that keeps the needs of every freelancer as a priority. The platform lets you create a bookable link where prospective clients can browse your experiences, send you messages, and schedule free or paid meeting times. For freelancers who want to take a more client-centric approach to their work, it’s the perfect platform.

Fees and pricing: Unlike other freelance platforms, 30mins gives you options — you can run payments through the platform for a flat 8% commission, or handle transactions externally (for free) through your own payments processor.

Payment and security: If you transact through 30mins, you can schedule payments before or after your meeting or service. As well you can rest assured all transactions are handled securely via escrow.

Availability of buyers: Buyers can find you through 30mins’ own search engine. The key benefit? Your bookable link can be shared on any platform, meaning you can monetize your audience on LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube — wherever your potential buyers may be.

Customer support: 30mins customer service team available via email or phone. They also provide comprehensive blogs and guides to help you get the most out of the platform.

Upgrade Your Freelance Career with The Right Platform Today!

So far, we’ve discussed five different freelancing platforms for professionals:

Fiverr — the go-to for most freelancers, with lots of jobs and high fees.

Upwork — a bigger-ticket platform with a variety of services.

Freelancer.com — a popular, affordable option for global talent.

TopTal — an exclusive, high-paying platform with blue-chip clientele.

30mins — an innovative social booking platform with user-friendly payments.

Each of these freelancing websites has its own benefits, pricing structures, security details, buyer profiles, and customer service teams that make them stand out from the competition.

Choosing which freelance platform best meets your needs will ultimately depend upon various factors such as budget, target audience, availability, convenience, and professionalism, among other items.

Whether you’re a seasoned freelancer or just browsing freelance websites to find remote work, research thoroughly before committing time and effort to any particular one. With that said, we hope this article has given insight into which platform is the best freelance website for you!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best site for freelancers?

The best site for freelancers will depend on various factors such as budget, availability, experience, and skill level. Popular services like Fiverr, Upwork, Freelancer.com, TopTal, and 30mins all offer unique benefits that cater to different needs.

Which site is best for beginner freelancers?

For beginners, Fiverr is a great option. It offers an extensive range of services, making it an attractive option for many kinds of freelancers, such as creative professionals, graphic designers, project management leads, and more! If you have an audience you’d like to port to your new freelancing services, 30mins may be your best bet.

Do I need a website as a freelancer?

While you don’t necessarily need a website as a freelancer, it’s a bad move not to have some kind of online presence. Most freelance jobs are also remote jobs, which are roles typically filled via online recruitment. It can also be an excellent way to showcase your portfolio and services, as well as attract more potential clients.

Lifestyle is the way an individual is living at a given time. The lifestyles of most people in the world today are dictated by their jobs. The decisions they make on where to live, what to wear, and what to eat all have a connection to the jobs they do. Most people in the world today, fall into this category. However, not all people are cut out for eight-hour desk jobs bound by rules and legalities on what they can and cannot do. I like to think of them as birds that are not meant to be caged. Turns out most of them are freelancers. But who is a freelancer? How are they any different from those who have embraced the traditional forms of employment?

A freelancer is anyone working independently and earning money on short-term tasks and projects for select clients. They take pride in making all the important decisions and working freely within the bounds of their passion and other things that are important to them. Often freelancers are in touch with their lifestyles compared to those working in a formal workspace. So, why are freelancers capable of living their preferred lifestyle?

Self-Management

Choosing freelance over formal employment is a very personal decision. It is the first significant step that allows freelancers to live their preferred lifestyle. A freelancer is self-employed and has the power to make major and minor decisions concerning their work and lifestyle. They decide right from the onset when and where they want to work. Additionally, they populate their day with what is important, relevant, or necessary to their survival. In most cases, what they love best carries the day. Imagine getting paid to do what you love!

Flexible Work Schedule

In a freelancer’s world, there are no clocks nor tight deadlines to be met. The daily schedules are flexible and very manageable. A freelancer is at liberty to move around the tasks available on his platter to fit his or her needs and interests. He or she will perform a task to its logical conclusion. There is no defined time to work or go home because most of them work from home anyway. A workday may start at 6 am or start at the end of summer to the beginning of the next summer! Each day a freelancer gets to decide on daily targets. Additionally, there is often extra time to walk a dog, go to the grocery store do laundry, or fit a new activity into their flexible schedule.

Flexible Locations

For most persons working for different organizations what comprises a formal office is pre-determined by the organization. What is expected of these employees within and outside the office is also very clear. This is not the same for freelancers. Freelancers get to decide where they want to work and what makes up their workspace. Moreover, he or she has the option of working from a room at home or a custom-designed non-traditional workspace. The kind of work a freelancer does will determine his office or work location. A freelance journalist for instance will have to do most of his or her work out where respondents are and only retreat indoors to compile the findings.

Growth and Development

Freelancers are not only laborers but also creators. The creative side of any freelancer must be subjected to the right environment for it to thrive. The lifestyle of freelancers allows them to grow and nurture their creativity by trying new things. Taking on these new things not only broadens the scope of a freelancer’s skill set but also allows for the discovery of new things!

Freedom

A freelancer has a say on who they work with. He or she is in a position to decide the clients he or she wants to work with. Remember this is mostly based on what a freelancer is passionate about. This is a big step in matters of living one’s preferred lifestyle. It however a luxury that those working for organizations cannot afford. It is very common to find a gaming pad or a musical instrument on a work desk of a freelancer or even a freelancer dressed casually taking on a serious project. Emphasis is on the comfort of the freelancer in the best way that drives up creativity.

Limited Distractions

Working as a freelancer significantly reduces distractions from co-workers, machines, and any office guests. A freelancer working from home can maximize the available time for faster task completion as opposed to one who has to commute to work. Even better a freelancer will freely choose to live anywhere without pegging his or her decision on the need to live closer to work. They work from home and meet clients virtually. The time saved up allows the freelancer time to incorporate other social activities into his daily routine. This effectively creates a balance.

Breaking the Monotony

Like I said earlier freelancers take on short projects which are easily finished within a short duration. A freelancer’s work schedule is likely to be punctuated with activities that seem irrelevant but are very useful. These activities help take the mind off work for a while. It is also the best way to scale up the concentration span of an individual working in a home or non-traditional work environment. All this is possible on the foundations of being a freelancer.

Conclusion

The benefits of freelancing include the freedom to work from home or a non-traditional workspace and a better work-life balance. I am therefore persuaded to agree with the assertions freelancers are living their preferred lifestyles because to them, nothing is cast in stone.

Freelancers have their share of challenges that can be directly attributed to the choices they make. However, they have the upper hand in deciding on the challenges they deal with. The decisions surrounding their lifestyles are theirs to make. This is done will full consciousness of what is at stake. Freelancers are living their preferred lifestyles because they are their own bosses.

The 21st century was predicted to be the era of the greatest leaps in terms of innovation and technology. This will would in turn lead to more jobs. Well, only one-half of this prediction came to pass since the number of your typical “jobs” have actually declined. This happened due to technological advancements. I know you are wondering how that is even possible? Well, that is a story for another day.

GIG Economy

A 2019 study conducted by Master Card indicated that the global gig economy generates $204 billion per year and is expected to grow by 17% by the year 2023. It’s predicted that by 2025 more than a third of all workers across the globe will take on gigs rather than being employed. Thanks to the increase of online platforms that are capable of generating income. Overall, 58% of the gig economy revolves around the transportation sector, IT, accounting, finance, legal, and other professional advisory services. Therefore, it is true to say that the gig economy is expanding fast.

EXPANSION

The expansion of the gig economy is not solely due to a lack of employment opportunities or lack of well-paying jobs as most people will assume. It’s more about people taking advantage of the revolution of technology and the need to maintain a work-life balance! Instead of the usual 9 to 5 jobs, the younger generations are slowly shifting their focus to the gig economy. This offers them temporary and flexible jobs through various online platforms. But what’s unique about the gig economy? Well, it presents significant benefits to both businesses, workers, and consumers by making work not only adaptable to the needs of the moment but also supports a flexible lifestyle. Now you understand why more people and businesses today prefer to hire or get hired as independent freelancers. This is what has led to the expansion of the gig economy.

But that’s not all!

The gig economy is a light at the end of the tunnel and a gift that keeps on giving.

With the workforce being increasingly mobile, and the increasing amount of work that is conducted on digital platforms, the gig economy is definitely the next big thing. For instance, the previously tight-knit relationship between jobs and locations is gradually being decoupled by the gig economy. Rather than conducting job interviews among people living near the company, most employers have the option of choosing the right person for a given task from anywhere across the globe.

The gig economy is helping most companies save huge amounts of dollars that would have been invested in searching and training people to perform one-time or short-term tasks. But here is the catch! companies may fail to invest in new and upcoming talent. Since skill is the qualifier for jobs in the gig economy, not proximity. With the ability to access a skilled workforce in the gig economy, more companies are becoming less interested in investing in new and upcoming talents.

We cannot ignore the fact that the gig economy provides consumers with alternatives to commercial products and services. This services are cheaper and more efficient than their mainstream counterparts; like Uber to replace taxis and buses, GrubHub which is an effective food delivery service that delivers whatever kind of food your heart desires, and online writing sites such Fiverr and Upwork where you can get a writing task done in a couple of hours instead of hiring a full-time writer. The good thing with the gig economy is that you’ll always have a wide range of applicants to choose from since your selection criteria will be based purely on the freelancer’s skill set rather than their proximity. Thanks to the development of computers and technology which has made people work efficiently from home.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also fast-tracked the expansion of the gig economy more than researchers had previously anticipated. In the post-pandemic world, the gig economy will keep expanding since most people who lost their jobs and businesses during the 2020 lockdowns have turned to the gig economy. Don’t get it wrong! They are not only turning to the gig economy as a survival strategy but rather due to the benefits that come with the gig economy. This includes flexible working hours from any location, and greater independence with nobody to look over shoulders.

A gig economy worker is assigned a task and left alone to complete it at their own pace as long as they don’t exceed the deadline. Lastly, the ability of gig workers to take on a variety of jobs has been an eye-opener. For those who had invested their time in full-time employment in the pre-pandemic world.

The need to break away from monotonous tasks has also pushed many professionals to venture into the gig economy. For instance, why should an accountant spend 30 years of his or her career preparing accounts and tax returns at a local law firm. There are tons of tasks an accountant can handle such as financial forecasting and risk analysis. Compiling and presenting financial and budget reports among others. In other words, the gig economy makes workers more excited about projects and they can be creative with their work since they vary with each day.

The gig economy also comes with its fair share of setbacks. Most gig economy workers work online and they are categorized as self-employed. This means they miss out on having any kind of social security that encompasses any kind of health/retirement care. Social security is mandatory for all employed persons in most countries. The gig economy frees up companies or online platforms from covering the risks encountered at work and the payment of any benefits. Faceless digital employers take no responsibility for the health and safety of their gig workers. It’s also reasonably argued that the gig economy is for the less reliable workers looking for remote jobs. Because they are not willing to put in the hard work. However, it’s easy to identify and avoid such workers just by setting up criteria for the selection of freelance workers.

Conclusion

I must admit, the gig economy has both excellent and volatile sides. While others might thrive will in the gig economy, others might find it challenging. Either way, the gig economy is ever-growing and it’s here to stay. So, if you feel like the gig economy satisfies your need, then it is the calling you’ve been waiting for. Don’t miss it!
